Tinkerer's Notes

The front intake fans included with the Lian Li Lancool 170M are airflow-optimized, but the restrictive magnetic dust filter and the lack of ventilation on the top and bottom of the chassis makes cooling tricky for hot-running or power-hungry components. The front fans can be replaced with two static pressure-optimized fans such as the Arctic P12 PWM to push air through the chassis more effectively and prevent heated air from being circulated within the motherboard compartment, while a compact tower-style air cooler such as the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 90 SE will help promote airflow.

This system once had an MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super Ventus 2X OC (285W TDP) and a Ryzen 9 5950X (105W TDP) cooled by a Be Quiet! Shadow Rock LP (130W TDP), and thermal throttling occurred quickly during stress testing. By switching to a Noctua NH-9US and installing two Noctua NF-F12 PWM fans in the front, the system was able to perform much better.

The RTX 3070 has a rated TDP of 220W, and the Ryzen 7 5800XT has the same TDP rating as the Ryzen 9 5950X. Performing office tasks and playing video games are less likely to cause thermal throttling than stress-testing, but keeping the PC in a well-ventilated area will help prevent that.
