The "Old School Cool" is a 1080p gaming machine (and some medium 1440p) that also gets your foot in the door to overclocking on what was a top of the line board and CPU when they were new. The GTX 1080 TI is still quite a capable card even today. The tradeoff is of course it requires more power to push frames than more modern cards.
These parts seemed to make their way to me and I thought it'd be a shame not to throw them into a retro build for one last hurrah. When they were new I couldn't have afforded this build and loved getting a chance to "stress test" some games over a few days.
The parts list:
- Raidmax Smilodon Dirk Tooth enthusiast PC Case
- Intel I7-3930K CPU - 6 cores/12 threads LGA 2011
- Asus Rampage IV Extreme overclocking motherboard (X79)
- EVGA GTX 1080 TI SC Black Edition 11gb
- PNY 480gb SSD
- Patriot Viper Xtreme 24gb 1600mhz (plus another 4gb uninstalled)
- Cooler Master 700W PSU
- Wifi 5 PCIE add-in card
- Power cord
- Additional accessories - alternate ILM for different form factor CPU heatsinks, CPU Cooler additional brackets for 2nd fan, etc.
I have completely refreshed the thermal compound and pads for the GPU and CPU and spent several days "stress testing" on a variety of games that I enjoy.
Notes: This build is ideal for someone wanting to dip their toes into light overclocking. If you want to get into more extreme overclocking, which this board and cpu would support, the PSU will need an upgrade for some additional supplementary power connectors to help with stability. I did not have such a PSU on hand. Also, it seems the GTX 1080 TI was dropped on it's corner, causing some fin damage to the heatsink and cosmetic damage to the shroud near the PCIE power connector. This does not affect performance. See the last picture. The board originally came with 32gb of RAM but one of the sticks tested as faulty, so the memory is in a 24gb configuration suggested by the manual. There is an additional 4gb matching stick being included. I was unable to get either the motherboard onboard audio nor front panel audio to work, so I included a usb to 3.5mm adapter. It seems this was a typical issue of this model of motherboard.
There are additional upgrades and accessories available. If you're interested, please message me either before or IMMEDIATELY after making an offer or purchase. Upgrades include additional storage, gaming peripherals, and any cable you need to get started.
