If you want a SteamOS living-room PC right now (instead of waiting on Steam hardware), Raster Zero is the “desktop parts” version of the steam machine

SteamOS note (read before you buy)

This system is designed with SteamOS in mind, but SteamOS on desktop hardware is still evolving and can introduce quirks depending on the hardware + specific games.

The Steam Machine hasn’t released yet, and early hardware/software launches often come with some bugs. For those who want to be on bleeding edge and want a Steam Machine today.

Why SteamOS (and why this over a console or “just Windows”?)

Versus a console

A console is simple, but it’s also a locked ecosystem. A Steam-style PC gets you access to a huge chunk of the Steam library, including titles and mods that may never show up on console, plus things like emulation, community tools, and broader controller support and no longer having to pay for online i.e. Xbox Gold, Playstation Plus, Nintendo Online etc.

Versus “just Windows”

Windows works, but it’s not designed to feel like a console-first gaming OS. A SteamOS-style setup is built around:

• controller-first UI
• fast suspend/resume behavior (depending on setup)
• fewer background processes than Windows
