If you are unfamiliar with ECC ram:

ECC RAM has extra chips on it that constantly do math in the background checking the data. If a single bit flips, ECC detects it and corrects it on the fly without the system ever knowing it happened. If two bits flip simultaneously it at least detects the error and can halt rather than continue with corrupt data.
